THE RIDDLE OF THE SPHINX

One of the oldest and largest statues in the world, Giza’s Great Sphinx has stood the test of time titillating all who have come to look on it. There are historical versions of the origins of this monolith, but there has also been controversy about its origins and its purpose on the Giza Plateau in Egypt. It has stood the test of time watching over Egypt and causing mystery as to who the Sphinx was built for, whose image the Sphinx’s head is, and if in fact there are any secrets underneath the imposing giant.

In mythological history, a sphinx is creature with the body of a lion and the head of a human. Occasionally, in Greek history, the sphinx has also had wings to accompany its lions body and human head. It is a creature that has a menacing demeanor and is told to be treacherous. It is often stated in the myths that the sphinx will have a riddle and those who cannot solve the riddle correctly are killed and eaten by this beast.

Traditionally, the Greek sphinx is depicted as a woman, whereas the Egyptian Great Sphinx is in the image of a man. Generally, these massive statues compliment royal tombs and religious temples and the oldest known sphinx is located near the Gobleki Tepe at a site called Nevali Çori in Turkey and it dates back to about 9,500 BC.

The Great Sphinx in Egypt is thought to have been constructed during the Old Kingdom (2558-2532 BC) under the reign of Pharaoh Khafre who was responsible for the second great pyramid on the Giza Plateau. In fact, the head of the Sphinx is believed to be in the image of Pharaoh Khafre. This is of course the most widely held historical theory of the builder and time frame for the Sphinx, but there are many dissenting theories that continue to be discussed and hypothesized.

There are a group of historians that believe the time frame for the construction of the Sphinx is wrong by many years. They theorize that the construction of the Sphinx far predates the reign of Khafre.

Auguste Mariette who was the founder of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo theorized in 1857 that the Sphinx was much older. He was pivotal for the unearthing of the Inventory Stela that dates back to approximately 678-525 BC. This Stela is an account that discusses how Pharaoh Khufu (father of Pharaoh Khafre) found the Sphinx which had already been mostly buried by the sands.

Rainer Stadelmann was the director of the German Archeological Institute in Cairo and had a different theory altogether. He wasn’t of the theory that Khufu came upon the already buried Sphinx, but that Khufu, the catalyst for the first great pyramid at Giza, was responsible for the construction of the Great Sphinx.

His theory is supported by the causeway, built in the reign of Pharaoh Khafre, connected to the existing structure with similar building style. Later, in 2004, a new theory was born that the Sphinx was the product of Khafre’s half-brother, Pharaoh Djedefre.

Of course, there are those that believe the Sphinx is even much older than the reigns of Khufu, Khafre, and Djedefre. There is the erosion theory that posits the Sphinx shows signs of generations of rainfall that has caused the erosive structures on the Sphinx, indicating the age of the Sphinx to be much older than that of the reign of Khufu or Khafre.

For thousands of years there have been restoration projects on the Great Sphinx. The first recorded restoration effort on the Sphinx was around 1,400 BC and was under the direction of Pharaoh Thutmose IV.

By the time Thutmose IV came upon the Sphinx, it was buried up to its shoulders in the sand. He put together an excavation team that eventually had dug out the front paws. This is where they placed the granite slab inscribe with Thutmose’s Dream Stele which reads, “… the royal son, Thothmos, being arrived, while walking at mdday and seating himself under the shadow of this mighty god, was overcome by slumber and slept at the very moment when Ra is at the summit [of heaven]. He found that the Majesty of this august god spoke to him with his own mouth, as a father speaks to his son, saying: Look upon me, contemplate me, O my son Thothmos; I am thy father, Harmakhis-Khopri-Ra-Tum; I bestow upon thee the sovereignty over my domain, the supremacy over the living… Behold my actual condition that thou mayest protect all my perfect limbs. The sand of the desert whereon I am laid has covered me. Save me, causing all that is in my heart to be executed”.

There have been other excavations as well. There is documentation that Rameses II attempted an excavation.  There was another monumental undertaking for excavation in AD 1817 under the direction of Italian archeologist, Giovanni Ballista Caviglia. Under his tutelage, the Sphinx was uncovered all the way down to its chest. Finally, between 1925 and 1936, the entire Sphinx was finally unearthed from its sandy tomb.

There are several legends associated with there being secret passageways and chambers beneath the Sphinx. During scans and other such technological measurements of the Sphinx, several anomalies have been detected that lead credence to this theory. In 1995, a renovation of a parking lot near the Sphinx was being undertaken and the workers uncovered several forgotten passageways, some of which plunge far underground nearing the area of the Sphinx.

Will we ever know the actual age of the Sphinx, or the mysteries that lie underneath in possible tunnels and chambers? This remains one of history’s mysteries.

THE DEVIL'S DEED (PART III OF III)

As the morning announcements were being read at Sandy Hook Elementary School around 9:35 am, Adam Lanza parked his mother’s car in the fire lane in front of the school, took out his Glock 20SF 10mm handgun, Sig Sauer 226 9mm handgun, his .223 Bushmaster XM 115-E2S AR-15 rifle, and many magazines of ammunition, each with thirty rounds in them. He was wearing a black T-shirt, black polo shirt, black pants, black socks, black shoes, black hat, and an olive-green cargo vest which held his extra ammunition. It was not known at this point, but before leaving for Sandy Hook Elementary School, Adam had killed his mother in her bed with a .22 rifle.

THE DEVIL'S DEED (PART II OF III)

Just before 9:35 am, morning announcements were being read to the students of the school over the intercom. Principal Dawn Hochsprung was in a meeting with school psychologist Mary Sherlac and lead teacher Natalie Hammond in a conference room by the front offices.  School custodian, Rick Thorne was making his morning rounds up and down the halls of Sandy Hook Elementary School.

THE DEVIL'S DEED (PART I OF III)

What is everyone’s biggest fear? We all have them and they vary from person to person. For some it is a fear of the dark, others, a fear of public speaking. There are whole sections of the DSM-5 dedicated to disorders of fear. From anxiety disorders to phobias, there are a plethora to choose from. But for every parent there is a fear that outweighs all others, the fear of losing a child.

BLOODLUST

I am so thankful that we live in a time of forensic technology to help bring justice to those who commit heinous crimes, and exonerate those who are innocent. Not so long ago, this wasn’t the case, and even as recent as World War II and a few decades beyond, someone could be incarcerated for someone accusing someone else of a crime.

Whether it be an accusation reported to the Nazi Gestapo or accusing your neighbors of being communists, these were some hard times for the innocent. This type of accusation resulting in someone being incarcerated or even killed goes back throughout history, and with no way of any other definitive evidence able to be gained, there were likely many innocent people persecuted, and even killed.

Now, don’t get me wrong, throughout history there have been some truly evil people who walked among us. These people created some of the most heinous scenarios and have found a place of infamy in history. This has been proven time and again with the likes of Adolf Hitler, Saddam Hussein, Osama Bin Laden, and most recently, ISIS.

But, what if there were some that gained infamy for being evil actually had never done any of the things they are feared for? What if there were conspiracies that impacted these people in such negative ways for history to remember for all time? That may in fact be the case with my newest story for History’s Mysteries.

THE ART OF THE STEAL (ST. PATRICK'S DAY MYSTERY)

When you hear names such as Rembrandt or Degas, what comes to mind? Many would look on and think of the beautiful and amazing artistic expressions created by artistic geniuses. Others would ponder how much these works would be worth, and wishing they owned them.

Many of those who do see the dollar signs however, would still proudly display their priceless pieces of artistic history. There would be fleeting moments when the sight of one of these masterpieces would draw the viewer into a land of creativity and beauty, with not a single conscious or unconscious thought revolving around money.

Now, let’s pretend for a moment that you do own one or more of these creations. I can only imagine how amazing that would feel. Now, imagine you go to your conservatory, because everyone who has art has a conservatory, right?

You go there to admire your priceless collection, only to discover the worst violation imaginable. Some person or persons has broken into your home and cut the canvases out of their frames leaving you with a macabre scene of tattered canvas remnants and empty gilded frames.

HOMETOWN MYSTERIES (PART IV OF IV - OLD TRAIL TOWN)

As we’ve seen with all great stories we’ve heard or read, they must come to an end. Even the dustiest, unknown trail has a stopping point. This trail you have been on with me is no different as I prepare to tell you my final hometown mystery. This does not of course mean the end of the trail for History’s Mysteries, or even, more future hometown mysteries, but it does signify the end of this four-part series.

HOMETOWN MYSTERIES (PART III OF IV - HEART MOUNTAIN'S DARK HISTORY)

In my last couple of posts, I have talked about beautiful parts of my hometown of Cody, Wyoming. The beautiful things in my hometown are too many to mention, which I am so thankful for. History is full of amazing places with amazing things wherever we go.

History also has its dark times as well. These dark times don’t necessarily have to define a person or place, but it is something that helps to make them. Cody, Wyoming isn’t immune to some of the sadder chapters of history, and it would be foolish for me to sugarcoat all of the history of Cody, Wyoming, as those who do not study history, are generally doomed to repeat it.

World War II was a chapter in history that changed many facets of the world as we knew it, and has shaped it into what we now know in 2017.

HOMETOWN MYSTERIES (PART II OF IV - "SPIRIT MOUNTAIN")

There is nothing quite like unparalleled beauty. Too often in today's world, we have a hard time stopping to notice and appreciate the beauty that's all around us all the time. I guess that is the price we pay, especially as adults for busy lives spent trying to take care of our families and attempting to make our mark on the world.
